You can cut the shaft to the exact size that best suits you. It's important to remember that the length of the dart shaft is an important element of the aerodymanics of the dart in flight. The shorter the shaft will assist in lifting the tail of the dart up when it hits the dartboard. Ideally the dart when it hits the dartboard should be parallel or 90% with the floor. If the tails of your darts point to the floor on impact you require either a shorter shaft and or a larger dart flight. This may vary slightly depending on your throwing style.
